No punctuation exercise

The clouds formed   And across the bay the ships appeared large and golden beneath billowing white sails cut out of the sky apparently   The men on board breathed deeply of the salt air   Up close one saw that the effect of bright light had caused yet another of its endless illusions   weathered board  in fact  made up the main body of the ship  although sturdy not the stuff of grand poetry except when viewed at a distance  Similarly the sails had been much sewn and patched  As for the men these proved swarthy and their appearance would intimidate had not the observer been familiar with what went into such lives
